Quando a molécula apresentar valor de µ = 0, será considerada [[apolar]] e para valor de µ ≠ 0 será designada de [[molécula polar|polar]].  A unidade utilizada para expressar o momento de dipolo no [[sistema internacional de unidades|Sistema Internacional]] é o Coulomb-metro, Cm.
