As carruagens terão aparecido no [[século 13 a.C.]], para o uso militar. Foram usadas na [[Roma Antiga]], no [[século I a.C.]], embora o veículo de transporte habitual fosse a [[liteira]], que continuou a ser usada nos séculos seguintes.<ref>''The World on Wheels'', Ezra Stratton</ref>

No [[século XVI]] as carruagens voltaram a ser utilizadas, inicialmente limitadas às classes mais altas da sociedade, em especial monarcas. No [[Século XVII|séc. XVII]] as suspensões melhoraram e por conseguinte as carruagens também. Eram mais rápidas, leves e variadas. [[Carpinteiro]]s, [[pintor]]es, [[entalhador]]es, [[dourador]]es, [[envernizador]]es e [[vidraceiro]]s trabalhavam na construção dos vários tipos de carruagem.

No início do [[século XX]] as carruagens quase deixaram de existir com o aparecimento dos [[automóveis]].
